Apple's New OS Seems Kind Of Bad
As soon as I saw the new liquid glass concept of the new Apple OS, I wasn't a fan.
My phone automatically updated and I had to suck it up and get used to it. I should have turned off all my automatic updates right then. Foolishly, I didn't. A few weeks later my MacBook also automatically updated to Tahoe.
It's been a while and I've sort of gotten used to the new visual style. It's fine. And it was probably always something that would have just taken a little bit to get used to.
But man, it really feels like things just... don't work as snappily as they used to? Here's a list of the issues I've had on both my iPhone 13 Pro and 2020 M1 MacBook Air:
- There's a notable delay half the time I try and unlock my phone. It seems entirely random. I'll pull the thing up to unlock, let the face ID do it's thing and then—nothing. A few times is no biggy, but this happens regularly. And sometimes the screen just freezes up entirely. In that case I have to hit the side button to reset things and then try to open the phone again.
- There are phantom notifications in my apps library. This seems to only happen in folders with multiple apps. I'll get a notification number that indicates some app in that folder has a notification, then I click into the folder and there's nothing to be found.
- Apple Podcasts has a lengthy delay when I click "recently updated." I use this app for all of my podcasts and use this button all the time. Prior to this update it was never an issue. Click, go to the page, find a podcast, done. Simple. Now I get a load wheel basically every time I click that page. It's about 5-10 seconds every time. Again, not something that would be annoying if it was a few times. But it's aggravating when it's now every single time I try to use the app.
- Widgets & apps take a noticeable amount time to render and load. This is perhaps the most minor nitpick of the update, but when I swipe to the Today View to the left of the home screen, I often see all the apps and widgets updating or rendering or lagging.
- My MacBook was lagging significantly on the initial Tahoe update. This was a significant lag on both keyboard and mouse inputs. It was consistent for the first 20 minutes or so as I was trying to use the computer after the update. I restarted and then that lag disappeared entirely, so at least this one hasn't been recurring.
- Apps are crashing now that I've never had an issue with before. I use Audacity to edit podcasts. I love this software. I've used it going back to like 2010 I first started learning how to do basic podcast editing. I've never had a problem with it. Recently I got the constant scroll wheel in the middle of a project and had to force quit to get anything to happen. Thankfully my edits autosaved and I didn't have to repeat any work. Maybe this has nothing to do with the OS update but with everything else happening, I assume it does.
I can forgive a stylistic choice that I just need to warm up to, but Apple's entire schtick is, "Hey this stuff just works."
Not so much with this one I guess.
