Carlos's Blog

Hello Bear

When I first started putting real effort into writing, it was on a blog.

I was in high school and enjoyed writing. I also had a lifelong passion for baseball that started from my tee ball days. My mom was a teacher and encouraged me to start a blog of my own. So I started writing about the Braves.

From that point on I knew what I wanted to do with my life—write about sports and, ideally, write about baseball.

I started writing for bigger sites that were not my own. Then I wrote for the student newspaper in college. Then got some real sports writing internships. Eventually I started working full-time as a writer for Baseball America. Dream job secured.

No complaints.

But I do miss blogging. Or I miss the slower, more authentic feel of the internet before algorithms and social media feeds and websites just got frustratingly bad.

This feeling prompted me to start my own personal newsletter a few years ago. It's caused me to disconnect more from Twitter—an app I used to love and swear by. The newsletter has been a nice refresher on what engaging with the internet can be like.

For whatever reason I started thinking about re-starting a blog over the last few days. I got sucked into a rabbit hole of blogging platform articles and YouTube videos of the best sites to use. I spent far too long tinkering with a WordPress theme (IE not actually writing) of my defunct blog from college that was started because a favorite journalism professor encouraged us to do so.

Then I stumbled across Bear. I immediately fell in love with the minimalism and simplicity. It seems like many of the other writers here feel the same.

I'm excited to get started.
