You Can Pry Em Dashes From My Cold, Dead Hands
I have no idea why I so commonly see articles and blogs about people announcing they are giving up the em dash—or at least thinking about it—because of how common it's become in AI writing.
Why would anyone ever do this? Because AI is built by copying the work and writing styles of actual people, we now have to stop writing like the real people we are?
Sorry, that's going to be a pass for me. As a respectable early 30s millennial writer, I'm keeping my em dashes—each and every one of them.
If an em dash is the only thing preventing someone from thinking your writing has been spit out of Chat GPT I think you have bigger problems.
Keep writing how you write.
Whether that's with long meandering sentences filled with commas, or with tons of semicolons (cringe), or in your best Cormac McCarthy-esque no punctuation style, or by throwing in a ton of passive-aggressive ellipses... or with the Oxford comma, or whatever else you really like to do.
Because that's how you like to write. Don't roll over for the robots.
