Re: My Perfect Laptop
I enjoyed this blog from Michael Harley—My perfect laptop—and wondered what my own perfect laptop would be as I was reading.
To be honest, I think my perfect laptop is pretty simple.
It's just any MacBook.
I got my first Apple laptop when I was in college. The first two years when I was at UNC I used a Dell laptop. I remember really liking it. It worked fine and I appreciate the keyboard it had.
It started to have some issues with the casing and then the battery, and I then upgraded to my first Apple computer: a 13 inch MacBook air. I can't remember the exact year my model was, but it was probably 2013 or 2014. It looked like this:

Part of the reason I got it in the first place was because I knew a friend, who had a friend, who worked at the student store and could get me a nice discount. Shoutout Aaron.
As soon as I powered it on and started typing I was hooked.
Since then I have been solidly an Apple laptop fan—even during a period where I was adamantly an android phone user. I don't think I've used another computer since. My use cases have always been extremely simple:
- I need to type a lot.
- I need to be able to browse the web.
- I need to do some light video and podcast editing.
- I need a built in web cam.
That's about it.
I'm currently using a 2020 M1 MacBook Air that powers my desk setup at home, and is super easy to throw in a backpack for any on-the-road travel I might need.
After more than a decade of typing on Apple keyboards, I'm not sure I would enjoy switching to something else. They do an excellent job with their hardware, the batteries of the machines I've had are always excellent and the built in web cams are always tremendously high-quality.
So, yes, my perfect laptop is dead simple and pretty basic. I prefer it that way. What about you?
