Madeira

Madeira was the second leg of our trip to Portugal. We originally weren't going to go here, but while researching the trip we heard glowing reviews and we were surprised by how quick and affordable the flight actually was.
I'm glad we did it.
We stayed in downtown Funchal, did the peak to peak hike and had some of the best food of our entire trip here—fresh seafood, bolo do caco, poncha, beef skewers and gelato.
Madi and I also met up with the wedding couple, Whitney and Tom, at the natural pools which was great because the guys got to do a lot more cliff jumping than we otherwise would have.
The driving here is a bit crazy, but otherwise, it's an 80. Above are my 10 favorite photos from the island.
1 — This is one of our earlier photos from the PR1 - Vereda do Areeiro hike. It takes you from the highest peak on the island to the second highest. We were above the clouds for most of the hike, which was about 4 miles and took us around 4 hours.
2 — The PR1 hike took you through a number of tunnels, which was cool. Here's an attempt at shooting one.
3 — Madi and I walking around downtown Funchal at sunset.
4 — Another shot of Madi on our PR1 hike. I like the lighting of this pic.
5 — This is a picture near the end of the PR1 hike. You can see the ocean in the background as well as another island on the right.
6 — Final shot of the PR1 hike. You can tell it was one of the highlights of Madeira for us. This was after we climbed the second peak at the end of the hike.
7 — An island-side shot of the Porto Moniz Natural Swimming pools. We spent an afternoon here just hanging out by the water. Madi even did one cliff jump—which is a big deal. Tom and I did plenty more.
8 — One of our favorite meals was at Bela 5 Snack Bar in Funchal. I got tuna (pictured here) and Madi got seafood rice. Maybe the best fish I've ever had, and the portion size was insane. Madi's favorite meal as well.
9 — We did the PR8 hike, Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço, on the east side of Madeira on one of our last days. This beach access was one of the highlights from that hike. (We were too tired to do the entire thing.)
10 — Selfie at the PR8 hike beach, with a few sailboats anchored in the background.

Lisbon

Madi and I are in Portugal for Whitney and Tom's wedding (congrats!), which was actually in Sintra. It's my first time out of the country, so it was really cool to have this first leg of our Portugal trip be in Lisbon with a bunch of friends from back home.
Above are 10 of my favorite photos from the Lisbon leg of the trip.
1 — Our first big open view of downtown Lisbon from Lumi Rooftop bar as we were trying to kill some time before check in.
2 — These were our first pastel de nata, from Manteigaria. After trying a few different places, I think they are still our favorite.
3 — A view of the Portuguese flag and Lisbon from the top of Castelo de São Jorge. Madi loved the peacocks here.
4 — A shot of the Equestrian Statue of King José I with the Rua Augusta Arch in the background.
5 — I thought this photo from Jake was cool. It has me in the foreground, with the rehearsal dinner setup in the middle portion of the shot. At the top you can see the National Palace of Pena peaking out of the trees. We didn't get to see this palace up close, but it looks awesome.
6 — My attempt at an artsy shot of the wedding venue.
7 — Madi and I posing at the cocktail hour of the wedding. The Basil Smash drink was a group favorite. And I think our group spent about two hours taking photos at this location.
8 — Scenes from the wedding reception.
9 — This was the first port wine we've ever tried, after dinner at Bono Lisboa—which was incredible and featured the best burrata we've ever had.
10 — They were doing watercolor paintings of couple shots at the rehearsal dinner. This was ours. I appreciate the detail showing my red wine and Madi's rosé—her go-to.

Draft Day 2026

Scenes from the 2026 MLB Draft in Philly before things got started.
It's crazy to type this, but this was my ninth draft on MLB Network and 11th draft with Baseball America (if I can include my 2014 intern year).
TV has never been natural for me, but at this point it does feel a bit more normal. It helps having a great crew behind the scenes and an 80-grade group of analysts around me—like Melanie, Jim and Lance.

North Carolina Move

Madi and I moved from Fairfax, Virginia, back to the Triangle in North Carolina today. It's been a long time coming.
A summer move right before the draft isn't ideal, but what are you going to do? If anyone in the Northern Virginia area is moving, we'd definitely recommend the folks at Prince Movers. We had two guys come help pack our entire apartment in about two hours.
After that, we got the apartment cleaned up and I drove the U-Haul down 95 South (while listening to The Fall-Off, of course) back home to North Carolina. Once we got there, it took us about four hours to unload everything ourselves—which you can probably tell from the top photo above.
Somehow the final box we brought in was just full of weights and this weighted vest. Seems cruel and unusual. Next time maybe we'll try and hire movers for the entire process.
Millie has already been making herself at home, as you can see. It feels good to be back.

Residency Graduation

I'm late posting these photos (though they're backdated), but Madi graduated from her OB/GYN residency program at Inova Fairfax after four hard years of work.
She has been an absolute grinder for the last eight years between med school and residency. I'm super proud of her, and it was great to have our parents come up and celebrate with her.

Sparta

I got to hang out with some friends in Sparta, N.C., over Memorial Day Weekend (MDL, IYKYK) this year.
It was foggy and rainy throughout the entire weekend, so visibility of the area was near zero—but it was still nice to do some mountain hikes, see Cade and Taylor preach in person for Pentecost, get some lifts in at Barefoot Fitness, lose at Catan and watch some ACC baseball.
-
Ocean Isle Beach 2026

Ocean Isle Beach is one of our favorite places in the world.
We got to spend the last week here, see a lot of family and friends, celebrate a wedding with Noah and Brittany, eat a lot of good food and take in a lot of good views.
A much-deserved week off for Madi and a hard-to-beat, work-from-home location for me.

The trend of wedding photos without the bride or groom anywhere in sight continues. Congrats to Tyler and Candler!

An Empty Gym

There are few things better than walking into the apartment gym and realizing no one else is in there. This has been a great setup for us for the last few years. I've even come around on the smith machine because of it.
Today was a pull day:
-Pull-ups
-Deadlifts
-Seated rows
-DB hammer curls
-Face pulls
-Seated incline DB curls -
Riders Field

A few weeks ago I got a chance to check out Riders Field, which is the home of the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate for the Texas Rangers.
This is one of the coolest and most unique baseball fields I've been to. When I was at the field I felt like I was in a different time and place. It has so much charm and character.
Apparently Riders Field was designed to feel like a "park inside a park" and they absolutely nailed that vibe. The open pavilion setup around the concourse makes you feel like you're walking around a Farmer's Market or something, and then there's a lazy river and water section in right field.
I got a great look at Alabama's Justin Lebron when I was here—which was the point of the trip—but just being able to take in a game was extremely cool and memorable.

Opening Weekend 2026

I traveled out to the Dallas area for the first weekend of college baseball this year. That's become the norm for me since the Shriners Children's College Showdown always has such a loaded field of teams and players.
Globe Life views in the first two photos, and then the third shot is from Grady Emerson's high school. It was nice to get a double header and see the top prep player in the country as well.
Missing from this image collage are photos from Torchy's, which is always a must-visit on this trip. Here's the draft notebook I turned around from this one.

Stopwatch No. 3

My old stopwatch started wearing out last year. I was definitely in need of a new one before I started getting out at games this spring.
I think this is only the third stopwatch I've bought in my nearly 10 years at Baseball America. I would consider that a pretty big win. Always the Accusplit. And always black.
Millie is not sure what she thinks of it.

Winter Storm Fern

The views from outside our apartment this morning after a night of snow from Winter Storm Fern. It's been mostly snow to this point, but more ice is on the way apparently.
-
Trattoria Villagio

Madi and I celebrated her birthday at our favorite restaurant in Northern Virginia: Trattoria Villagio.
This place is one of our favorite restaurants of all time, and tonight we splurged:
In order:
1 — Arancini
2 — Burrata
3 — Tagliatelle Bolognese (my main)
4 — Rigatoni Alla Vodka (Madi’s main)
5 — Chocolate Soufflé with Vanilla Gelato
6 — The birthday girlShe was glad I pushed for the arancini and I was glad she pushed for the dessert. An 80-grade dinner and restaurant. Cheers.

Nike Cat

Typically shoes are the best things in the orange Nike box. Not today!
I guess Millie is brand loyal just like I am.
-
Nike Christmas

I'm nothing if not brand loyal to Nike.
This year my family gifted me some awesome Nike gear that's going to be great for more running in 2026. The Nike Pegasus running shoe has been a great daily driver for me and the black and white colorway of this Pegasus Plus is so sick.
-
Sixty Vines

Madi and I got dinner at Sixty Vines with some med school friends. The restaurant had a cool vibe, and a good backdrop for a photo.
Sadly, our trip to New York has ruined me when it comes to pizza. Every slice I've had since just makes me think about how much better L'Industrie is.
-
New York 2025

Madi and I took a trip up to New York to see friends and eat a lot of food. I think L'Industrie (second photo) is easily the best pizza I've ever had in my life.
The same might be true for Ramen we got at Ippudo (fifth photo), Indian we got at Kebab aur Sharab, and bagels we got from PopUp. We also got a New York chopped cheese from a random bodega, which has been on our list of things to do for a long time.
Apart from food, we watched Wicked on Broadway, walked around Brooklyn and Central Park and saw a comedy show at The Stand.
Having friends show you around the city is far cooler than visiting without any local expertise. Shoutout to Catherine, Jack, Dean, Mari, Vishal and Thom.
